When to put curtains
Some fabrics discolour in the sunlight, but a lining prevents that. In the bedroom, it is also wise to use curtains with a (light-tight) lining so that it becomes as dark as possible. On single-glazed windows, a quilted lining provides insulation.
How much fabric do you need?
Take a curtain rail or rod 20 centimetres wider than the windows so that the curtains do not hang in front of the window when you slide them open. Match the amount of fabric to the length of the rail.
For curtains with a single pleat, you need a rail length times 1.8 of fabric. Suppose you want curtains of 4 meters. Then you need 4 x 1.8 = 7.20 meters of fabric.
For a double pleat, you have to take the width of the fabric times 2. If you use nesting rings, then the width times 1.6 will suffice.
If the fabric is not available floor-to-ceiling, you will have to stitch together strips of fabric. Make sure you calculate the same number of lanes for both sides. This is how you calculate lanes: divide the rail width by the fabric width.
For example 500/150 cm = 3.3 meters x 1.8 = 6 lanes.
Then you determine the height of the eyelet curtains: room height minus 2 centimetres distance from the floor, plus a 35-centimetre fabric allowance for the double hem and the curtain band. Multiply this result by the number of lanes, and you know how much fabric you need.

Tips and tricks about curtains
If the room is above three meters, it is wise to opt for a double pleat. Otherwise, there will be no wrinkles left at the bottom.
Match the blackout curtains to the decor. With a modern concrete floor, warm tinted curtains can create an atmosphere. Modern curtains in an off-white shade look great with a wooden floor.
You will need extra fabric if you choose a design with a large pattern. It is best if the entire pattern is repeated on every lane.
Curtain fabrics from specialist shops are pre-washed, but you still have to consider a three per cent shrinkage. Dry cleaning is the safest.
Natural fabrics, such as wool and linen, react strongly to humidity.
